I will be cycling this weekend. Not something I particularly enjoy, but my Dad seems to be getting his mojo back after that nasty accident a couple of years ago. His bike is going in for service tomorrow and I've said that I'll go out with him to make sure he's safe. West Sussex is cycling heaven, if that's your thing.
My son gave me quite a nice bike a couple of years ago, but it's a bit big for me and I've never really cycled for pleasure. I'm a walker.

A bit of a side issue, but I'm convinced so called foodies are just conning themselves there is anything fundamentally better eating something costing a few hundred quid in some fancy exclusive restaurant that could be bought for a fraction of the cost at just a decent place. I think it’s the exclusivity of eating at mega expensive places and eating exotic or rare dishes like giraffes testicles or some such guff, but it’s all smoke and mirrors. I disagree. But I understand it’s not for everyone. When I get something astonishing and small and creative and delicious that I’ve never had before, I get incredibly delighted in a way that even the best burger or pizza can’t do. That said, I’ll travel for either the fancy food or the best pizza. Some luxuries I like. Some parts of luxury cars - a smooth ride, and a comfortable seat, are genuinely nice. Others, like seatback TVs, say, are fripperies that I think are pointless sh*t. And there’s no reason for a car to be able to go above 90mph. I see the value in a big wide decent bed. Caviar and oysters and lobster do nothing for me. Foie gras I love. Antique furniture is just uncomfortable. I’d rather something modern and comfortable, as long as it has a nice clean design aesthetic. I hate the show, the dance, of fanciness. The staff, the formality, the ballgowns and bow ties, the passing port in one direction and Madeira in the other, that is the very opposite of luxury to me.

My Sussex cycling memory is mostly going up Ditchling Beacon when I was in much worse shape than I am now and being in massive pain and having to get off and push on many occasions and being almost incapable of restarting.

Yeah, but yours isn’t a real bike. Yours is a lazy person’s kind with a motor in it.

Two of the granddaughters are with us from Friday to Monday, which will no doubt morph into all three of the granddaughters, Mrs. Mogg being such a sucker for the loving grandmother bit. Clearly, Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti whacked up to 11 will be replaced yet again by singing along to Disney's greatest hits (sic), binge-watching Breaking Bad will give way to my having to sit through bloody Frozen and Paw Patrol for the umpteenth time, the whole edifying experience then capped off with a somewhat delayed Easter-Egg Hunt. Living the dream? F*ck off! PS: I love 'em all to bits mind.

I see from my Fatbit that I am back in the top 10% of exercising adults now.
Had friends down from the Old Country on Friday night. Curry, booze and laughter. Also, whisky. Nice walk with old friends on Saturday.
I went out cycling with my Dad yesterday. Only 6 or 7 miles, but we both enjoyed it and it was very good for morale. Mrs. B and I then went for a classic Sunday afternoon ramble. Spring has sprung and Sussex is looking wonderful.

I was out cycling on my new bike. My new bike is a lot more, er, sturdy than my other bikes, and also only cost about 10% as much as the road and mountain bikes. But I need to get used to riding it, as it's going to be my touring bike in a couple of months. Put 45 miles on both Saturday and Sunday, and tried to keep up with people on faster bikes and now my legs and arse both hurt. It's a good bike for my purposes, and very good considering the price, but it's definitely a slow and steady mule.

I like Decathlon, as it suits my budget and my fitness-lite outlook. Mrs. B bought me a pair of padded cycling shorts which boasted moisture control qualities, which led to a certain amount of sniggering between my father and I.

Decathlon always seems to have good gear for the price. It never has the best gear if you were wanting to be an elite athlete. But for athlete-lite it's probably right.
I've decided to go a bit athlete-lite for this bike as it suits my purposes. Old school flat pedals. Just a single chain ring in the front. Aluminium frame. But for touring it's fewer things to go wrong, things less likely to snap or crack in transit, lots of lugs on the frame if you want to load things on. And I'm a pretty strong rider who's going slow - I'd rather have flat pedals and normal-looking shoes that I can wear anywhere off the bike.

We had some weird weather today. It's been a bit windy rain showers on and off but there were two squalls where it suddenly got very windy and absolutely hammered down with rain and hailstones for about 10-15 minutes each time.

Yeah, it's been like that here today. We got very lucky and got away with it.

Naples to Bari, then the ferry to Dubrovnik and riding south to Tirana.
