I spent all day yesterday building the foundations for a greenhouse in my neighbours garden. I dug out the base, backfilled it with ½ ton of hardcore and layed paving flagstones on top. As a result - I couldn't get out of bed this morning (me back's gone). My wife had to help me get up and I'm sitting in my computer chair as it's the only place I can get comfy (it's got lumbar support) I'm NOT old !

Dunno about a cuddle! ...have you tried swinging from the chandelier? Seriously though, keep as mobile as you can. Lying around makes it much worse! Also try this... Stand up. Both arms straight up. Hands held together. Move arms backwards several times. Hurts like hell but introduces movement to lower lumber region! I'm surrounded by peeps who keep doing their backs in. Ok, so I've had my fair share too, so I consider myself something of an expert on this one.
Has your back gone before and if so, did you send out a search party, or failing that, see a doctor?
You've probably pulled a muscle and if you're not on antiinflammatories and painkillers, it could be what your doc would prescribe, plus a couple of days' proper rest. Then, once feeling a bit better, some gentle exercise. (GENTLE I said, not going back to finishing the greenhouse/gardening).
If you suffer from recurrent back pain, then I'd recommend a good chiropractor.
Look after yourself and ease up on the cuddling - it might hurt you more.

Just recovered from one of those myself Beachy! Nasty buggers. However, I do agree that staying upright and mobile, walking around, is the best option. I can't take antiflams, so had to rely on cocodomol - not very efficient. Worst for me was laying in bed, for some reason that was sheer hell and agony.
I'll give you a gentle cuddle mate, but honest, don't sit for too long, you do need to keep upright as much as you can, it takes the stress off your back.

Beachy you poor thing, i sympathise. I first did my back in falling on an ice rink when some idiot ploughed into the back of me, i was quite good up until then, used to go regularly. I didn't see the accident coming that was the problem. It has given me recurring back problems to this day and it happened over 25 years ago! Try assuming a position that's the most comfy for you, nothing too adventurous though! Take it easy, take anti-inflammatories to reduce any internal swelling etc., and lots of fuss and attention, cuppas etc. Here's a hug from me too! xx ;D

haaaaaaaaallo Is this the old peoples thread ? < peers creakily around > yes yes ..Im yet another back sufferer .Disc out of kilt .I do gentle( ish) stretching yoga exercises for mine .Picked out all those that were specifically for the back and noticed they were pretty similar to the ones the physio therapist told me to do ...only more relaxing and more effective . Really ,anything that stretches your back muscles ,strengthens and straightens them will ease the pain ,beachy .Just dont attempt anything if it hurts too much -wait till the inflammation goes down somewhat .And learn to bend from the knee after its gone or it won't stay gone .Bending from the waist is poison .

Oh beachy . have you tried hanging from anything ? A door frame or tree branch or summink similar? Just something thats high enough you have to reach up to .Then hang on tight and lift your feet off the ground .Hurts your hands and arms so much you forget about your back hurting lmao.
No ,seriously ..that can really help

I bought a tens machine as I have a back problem too!! Probably from playing too many bowls games!! I remember my brother used to do that hanging from the back door frame. lol. A hot water bottle also helps. I also do the exercises the physio told me to do. She had a tens machine. Thirty three pounds a visit was a bit steep though!!

Hanging is excellent, as is another method I use.
Bare feet, heels against a wall, or door. Your backside has to touch it, and your shoulders and back of your head. Your hand will fit in the hollow of your back when done right, but you stand almost to attention. Then pull everything in and up, keeping your line on the wall, you should rise an inch or more, hold, relax and repeat as many times as you are comfortable.
That 'line' is how your spine should be, not the curve that many develop in time. When you can do that with no discomfort at all you are standing correctly.

Human beings are not meant to walk on two legs, we used to be quadripeds (right term?), which is the reason I believe so many of us suffer from back trouble.
