Over there on the right hand side of the posts , one is a file the other is a note. Some of the files look to be on fire , I see a smiley face next to the Democracy thread.

The files are topics. The ones on fire are hot topics(certain number of replies posted) The note is the standard symbol for a new thread but the poster of a new thread can choose from several others if he or she wants to have a different symbol. That's why there are a couple of smilies in the lists.

The files that are on fire indicate that the "thread is hot" and getting loads of fast posts. The smiley is just a cool custom little icon you can put up next to your thread when you first post it up.
