The locals hated it. Brought the tone of the area down. Attracted low life to the area. Property prices dropped.
Ripe for arson. What a shit world we live in.

What was the cost of it recently having been done up? 80k per flat or something?

If you work on a major contract in London, you go through a “gang master” Most of the labour is immigrant. They do as they are told. Stories from residents, who complained about the work were told to STFU The whole system is corrupt Maybe, but Building Control and the Fire Officer are supposed to make sure the cowboys don't get away with cutting corners. Both specialisms were "privatised" long ago. Who pays the piper ..... In a perfect World, that might happen In this case, it is anything but perfect. As an example, Fire stops are supposed to be fitted between floors around pipes, the pipes are then boxed in, nobody waits for the Building Inspector or the Fire Officer to check the work has been done. Fire Stops might be fitted if the Building Inspector Or Fire Officer happens to be on site at the time. You have to work on one of these sites to appreciate what goes on

What I'm saying is that the current system of both Local Authority and private BC surveyors us imperfect because the indepndeny guys have a commercial interest in interpreting the Building Regulations liberally. This was always going to happen. Back in the bad old days you had no choice but to take your Full Plans Applucation to the Council's BC Dept. and tney behaved like petty little tyrants accordingly. I think things have gone a bit too far the other way now.

Council Inspectors behave like little Hitlers now, if you are a regular guy who fancies doing his own extension, conversion, whatever, if you are registered builder, most work goes through on the nod.
Take my word for it, some incredible shoddy work has been passed off by inspectors, who never left the warmth and teapot in the site hut.

I guess it depends on your district surveyor. Ours in Richmond was a really decent bloke and was very laid back, but correct. He's certainly become a bit more formal recently, post Imminferno.

Curiously, I've discovered my three storey house is only a 2 storey house according to the Council. Despite the fact I bought it off the builders and the council signed it off. Apparently they can't count to 3. Getting it sorted is a f*cking nightmare.

Ah, well that's planning. Let's face it, councils don't really employ the cream of the crop professionally, nor the most motivated or enterprising of people. What kind of whelk wants to become a Planning Surveyor?

The NHS would collapse without medically trained, teenage engineering lawyers like them.
