Which they are not especially. Their transpiration rates are lower than acacia.

They are impractically thirsty for lining the streets in Southern California.

I don't know. You tell me what the transpiration rate for each varietal of each of these trees is, compared with the common eucalypts that are grown in southern California's cities.
People who seem to know what they're talking about seem to think that these trees make more sense that eucalyptus. If you wish to dispute that, I'd like clear evidence.
And not just on transpiration rates, but also on stability, on canopy cover, foliage area, drought tolerance, root spread, etc... etc...

Does California have rich soils throughout?

So you don't have evidence that eucalyptus is better for urban southern California than the trees recommended by local experts, Baloo? Other than "Screeeeereerreeerraaach!", that is. Which doesn't seem like a compelling argument.

Didn't say better, just challenged you on why you think they're worse. Job done.

My sides etc..
The cost of removing those huge trees in suburban California would be prohibitive. Each one would have to be lopped from the top, each section being winched down.
