Interesting that it is hammered into people like teachers and youth workers that they must be prepared to listen if a child confides in them, but under no circumstances should you promise that you'll keep what they say a secret.
That, perhaps, is where the rot sets in. A culture of secret sin. The Confessional.

Well, it is by far the biggest and, you know, the celibacy thing probably doesn't help. Is it really celibacy? Why wouldn’t celibacy lead to them having secret liaisons with other adults instead of abusing children? |

I'm sure that is also the case, lots of priests who are not nonces will just be shagging nuns or lay women.
As for believing kids who confide they've been abused, well it should never be kept secret, and in fact I'm sure every youth organization these days will have a duty to report. Medical personnel certainly have a duty to report. Even if you think the kids not being truthful you should report it, those who specialize in child safety are far better equipped to make that determination

It may be that the adult celibacy creates both a tension and the secrecy that allows the kiddy fiddlers to get away with it. |
