The number of US homegrown terror cases has risen sharply, the FBI boss has said, as he warned that the deadly January Capitol riot may serve as 'inspiration' for extremists.

Some 2,000 FBI domestic terror probes are open, up from 1,400 at the end of 2020, Director Christopher Wray said.

Arrests of "racially motivated violent extremists," including white supremacists, have tripled since 2017.

For the first time, Mr Wray called the Capitol siege "domestic terrorism".

The attack could be "inspiration to a number of terrorist extremists," he told a Senate hearing on Tuesday.

Over 260 Trump supporters have been arrested in connection with the storming of the US Capitol to date.

An American man who crashed a stolen lorry into a house before shooting two black bystanders was a suspected white supremacist, police say.

Nathan Allen, 28, fatally shot retired policeman Dave Green and military veteran Ramona Cooper in Saturday afternoon's attack in Massachusetts.

Investigators later found racist and anti-Semitic writings by Allen, who was shot dead by officers at the scene.

He was married, employed and had a PhD and no criminal history, police said.

According to CBS affiliate WBZ-TV, Allen walked through a marsh to a garage in the city of Winthrop where he stole a plumber's lorry. He crashed the vehicle into an unoccupied home, causing extensive damage.

He then climbed out of the wreckage and attempted unsuccessfully to carjack another vehicle.

As he walked away, he shot Ramona Cooper, 60, a staff sergeant in the Air Force, three times in the back, killing her.

He then shot retired Massachusetts state trooper Dave Green, 68, multiple times. When police arrived on the scene they exchanged gunfire with Allen, killing him.

Investigators said they found "troubling white supremacist rhetoric" in the gunman's handwriting.

A man has been sentenced to more than six years in prison for plotting to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer over the state's Covid-19 restrictions.

Ty Garbin was part of a group of more than a dozen men accused of involvement in the plot.

He was sentenced on Wednesday and also ordered to pay a $2,500 (£1,820) fine.

The defendants, some of which are members of an anti-government paramilitary group in Michigan, considered storming the state Capitol in Lansing. However they then planned to kidnap Ms Whitmer from her holiday home last year, the New York Times reports.

Six of the group have been charged in a federal court and Garbin, 25, is the only one to have pleaded guilty. A further seven face charges of terrorism and gang-related offences in state court in connection with the plot.
