As I was walking the dogs in the woods today I could hear the timeless sound of a stout Sussex yeoman landing his helicopter in a paddock. This got me wondering whether he had been to market or perhaps been called to the big city on some matter of great import. That, in turn, made me wonder if Battersea Heliport was still a thing, and whether Mayor Khan's environmental fanaticism had cramped the style. Apparently not, londonheliport.co.uk/fees/No ULEZ for massively, massively innefient paraffin budgies. Oh no. Nuh-uh. I wonder what the emissions are for a twin piston chopper?

Presumably the ULEZ which is about breathable air in the city, doesn’t really give a sh*t about what happens above 50 meters. And I guess there are other taxes that tax the sh*t out of choppers

All powered aircraft burn a shittonne of fuel on the ground.

Also, avgas is much cheaper than petrol and is still leaded. Also, no catalytic converters on aircraft.

Now I’m beginning to wonder if you’re at least partly right. A quick internet search shows that there appear to be no extra taxes for flying private jets or helicopters. Just the same passenger transport duty that people on regular commercial flights pay - in fact, usually less. AV fuel is taxed at 35p/litre (compared to 55p/litre for petrol). There’s clearly not enough tax of private flying.
None of this is necessarily a ULEZ thing. ULEZ is mostly about NOx emissions (Euro4) and I don’t know if aviation engines burn clean or not (my guess is not, but I don’t know) and aircraft are all heavy enough that they’d anyway generally be covered by the originally LEZ rather than the new ULEZ which applies to smaller vehicles. Also, the ULEZ charge is only 12.50 per day which, given the cost of helicopter flights overall, is obviously not enough and wouldn’t deter anyone.

Of course that charge won't deter anyone, but it's interesting that they haven't bothered even a token gesture. In fact, they could whack a significant charge on choppers, which are largely a luxury.

Should, not could. But ULEZ and LEZ explicitly refer to road vehicles. LEZ also doesn’t apply to, say, houses.

That's true, but houses aren't transport and ULEZ is a TfL thing.

Surely it’s a GLA thing, not TfL?

Both, I guess. If the GLA has a policy on reducing unnecessary emissions from vehicles, it would seem perverse to ignore the most unnecessary and the most polluting. Low-flying fruit and all that.

I can't really think of any justification for not taxing the arse out of luxury aviation in town.

I can't really think of any justification for not taxing the arse out of luxury aviation in town. TBF, I can’t see any justification in not taxing the arse out of luxury aviation absolutely everywhere. I mean, they should tax the arse out of all aviation, but particularly extra for luxury private aviation.

Immie on immie crime. "This is the moment a Kurdish migrant tried to kill a stranger by pushing him onto the tracks at a London Underground station - as he is found guilty of attempted murder. Brwa Shorsh, 24, shoved stranger Tadeusz Potoczek, 61, at Oxford Circus in central London on February 3. Although he denied trying to kill him, Shorsh admitted he did it for 'revenge' thinking the postman gave him a 'dirty look'. Mr Potoczek, a postman who was on his way home from work, was seen walking along the platform when Shorsh lurched up from a bench and shoved him. The postman narrowly missed touching the live rail on the southbound Victoria Line and he was helped back up to the platform by a kind passenger. But the driver of an oncoming train told Inner London Crown Court: 'If he had been on the track a few seconds later, he would have been killed.'" www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13693071/moment-Tube-passenger-pushed-train-tracks-CCTV-homeless-denies-kill.html

“ Shorsh previously told the court he wanted 'revenge' after three women allegedly laughed at him for being homeless.”
Atwood voice: “Men fear women will laugh at them, women fear men will kill then”.
Glad to see he was actually found guilty of attempted murder.
