Mine won't touch them. I thought they would love them but, no, they look at you like you're mental.

Euphemism or not, those are still the best kind. Better than the dried out ersatz Mr Porky's ones you get in most pubs.

Euugh! You're right, reconstituted pork scratchings are actually worse than au naturel. It's one of those foods, like winkles and kidneys, that have fallen out of popular consumption. And rightly so. We don't need to eat crap like that any more. Interestingly, there's a parallel with actual dog food which no longer contains ash as a bulking agent, hence the disappearance of the ghostly white dog poo of our childhoods (jumpers for goals etc.).

Why do you think scratchings are crap? They're real parts of real animals, smothered in salt and more salt. Mmmmmm!

Oh, I don't know. I used to like them but, you know, the bristles. I also used to "enjoy" pickled shellfish. I still enjoy smoked oysters. Mmmmmm ..... smokey.
Been in Cornwall all weekend. Not a crab, lobster or scallop to be had. And my mother wouldn't let me go to the pub. Something about killing your father.

I thought you were fixing your dad's leg, not killing him?
Pickled shellfish are rubbish.

The whole idea of deep fried pork skin makes me nauseous.

I think that's what she meant. I had a series of tasks to carry out, mainly to prevent him from attempting them instead of resting when he gets out. You know, old man stuff like cleaning the gutters and getting up on the roof. I'm a modern day saint: this summer my very fit, wealthy BiL had to wait on the ground while my 83 year old FiL regained consciousness on the roof of the BiL's villa in Madrid, where he has been allowed/obliged to go in order to employ his professional skills as a carpenter, and subsequently passed out. Wear out the old first, eh?

Pickled shellfish are rubbish. Largely true. I can't think of any that I would eat in circumstances other than a bet/forfeit in a drinking game. Potted shrimps are very tasty, mind. Oooh, something else which is an old food that we probably shouldn't eat: dripping. Hell, yeah. Can't remember the last time I saw dripping.

Occasionally "schmaltz" turns up, which seems to basically be dripping with lots of salt added - possibly from different animals, and is pretty delicious on bread.
We installed new gutters this summer with a fancy leaf-guard thingy, so there's no more gutter cleaning in my future. The new gutters are also super fancy and seamless and therefore don't leak, which is a bonus.

I'll be interested to see how those leaf-guards work. I suspect you'll find that they introduce new problems. Sorry to be a downer. Seamless is good though.

I have my doubts about the leaf guards long term, but they get good reviews. The amount of leaves that fall in New England makes me happy to have them even if they need flushing out in a couple of years. Without them the gutters need cleaning many times a year.
