By "setting Hezbollah back decades" he might as well have said "just created a new generation of hopeless, embittered and radicalised fighters".
A generation is generally measured as 20 years, but I suspect that local mores and the circumstances will make that more like 10-15.
It would be interesting to review the various outbreaks of conflict in generational terms. I wonder if anyone's done that.
