Yeah. It's falsely trying to look moderate and reasonable, trying to claim that you're empathetic to both sides, when in fact there's no real equivalence at all. It's also terribly intellectually lazy just trying to always claim to be in the middle ground because that's the theoretically safest spot. "I think both Stalinist and Trotskyites have good points. As a reasonable centrist I consider myself halfway between the two."

It's just the standard psychological tactics of the extreme ideologue. It goes back to the bible (sitting on the fence) and beyond. Ignore the ones totally opposed to you - you'll never persuade them. Instead, use your resources to attack the ones you see as being sort of in the middle and you should be able to convince some to come over to your side, and getting some is better then getting none. Lefty tactics 101.

I knew a teacher who when faced with a new class would bide his time for a bit before clouting the most inoffensive pupil for some non-offence, as this subdued the more unruly who thought, 'Wow - if he hits Smithy for that, what'll he do to us?' It always worked apparently. Not that he'd get away with that nowadays, more's the shame.
