Odd, that. I don't think I have ever known of a punch-up in a rugby club or at any social goings-on involving rugby. Plenty of spats on the pitch, naturally, but nothing malicious, just people losing their rag for a second. The taffs do take the game rather more seriously mind.

i used to play for barnstaple and we had puch ups throughout Devon and Cornwall.
A particularly vigourous fight in Exeter involving the first second and third team vs the entire exeter scally population.
I was warned not to take a taxi in one town because one of our players had beaten up a taxi driver previously.

Lots of rugby punch ups where I grew up, but it was union. In fact just lots of punching all round, they even had an expression for it, probably used in lots of places '10 pints, curry and fight' was the best night out

It's true that many are little more than repositories for the thick/lazy/unmotivated kids of snobbish, wealthy parents with sharp elbows, but any decent private school will have a common entrance exam and interviews. Mine did. So did my son's. Many won't even consider taking kids on at 6th Form if they don't have an outstanding set of GCSEs.

There are quite a few schools in and around London whose pupils appear to be simple accessories in vulgar caps and blazers for the 4x4.
