And yet in they pour, fleeing from the Heulocaust. "More than five million EU citizens living in the UK have applied for settled status, nearly double the number thought to be residents before the EU referendum, official figures revealed on Thursday. The Home Office data showed 4.9 million of the 5.4 million had already been granted settled status, of which 4.88 million were living in England. This compares with the three million that were estimated to have been in the UK at the time of the vote on Brexit in 2016. "Long working hours are killing hundreds of thousands of people a year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The first global study of its kind showed 745,000 people died in 2016 from stroke and heart disease due to long hours." www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-57139434Does this seem correct from an epidemiological point of view?

It seems plausible to me that long hours are a contributing factor in lots of deaths. That number looks like it’s probably about 0.5% of all the worldwide deaths (a very rough calculation in my head that could be totally wrong). So it’s not a totally outrageous claim.

It doesn't go into much detail about how they did it. There's likely to be a lot of confounders. Lifestyle factors that go along with working long hours for example. There's also nothing to suggest (although the Guardian will) that cutting the average person's working hours will increase life span. Dunno. Bit skeptical.

'I was working 72 hours a week - it was cult-like'
Go 'extra mile' despite 95-hour week - Goldman boss
Goldman Sachs bankers ask for 80-hour week cap.
Stress. Not just the hours they put in. Combine the two and you have a killer. Add wrong diet and insufficient rest. Marital problems. Recipe for disaster.

I wonder what the life expectancy is among British public sector teachers? They work 20-22 hour weeks.

They could live forever, if they wanted to. They probably just can't be arsed.

I saw a study a few years back linking long commutes to early death, contested driving conditions or packed transit, mostly down to stress.
