In retrospect, Trump is the architect of this disaster. He should have (easy to say in retro) flown in thousands more troops and evacuated as many as was feasible first before starting the withdrawal. It was a NATO operation. The vassals followed their American overlord. Britain is always eager to prove itself the loyalist of them all. The invasion of Afghanistan is one on the long list of reasons why NATO should be reformed as a European Defence Force, with the USA being excluded.

Every contribution by the vassals gives resources to the overlord to use. Dead British or other foreign troops don't worry the American public and there's no damage to the election prospects of American politicians. Outside of the NATO countries themselves, there's no assumption that their operations are legitimate. On the contrary.
