So, here's a story from the US that you may have picked up fragments of. It's absolutely insane - if you were writing an implausible Prestige TV drama from HBO that got rejected because there were too many unlikely deaths that someone, surely, would have investigated, it might be this.
The bare facts:
The Murdaugh family are very rich, are in South Carolina, have a massive law firm but also run the prosecution offices for five different counties. Despite the conflict of interests.
In about 2015 a young gay man was found dead on a round near the family home under mysterious circumstances. Nobody said anything more.
In 2018 a housekeeper for the family died in a "trip and fall". The Murdaugh family settled with hers for half a million dollars.
In 2019 Paul Murdaugh was involved in a boat crash that killed a young woman. Paul Murdaugh was underage at the time, and was almost certainly drunk, but nobody did a sobriety test possibly because the family runs the legal system. Apparently he got into an argument with her, the boat drove into a bridge piling "throwing her from the boat" (if he hadn't already thrown her off). Her body was only found a week later.
In June this year, Paul Murdaugh and his mother were shot outside the family kennels. Nobody knows who did it.
A couple of days later Paul Murdaugh's grandfather died - probably not suspiciously.
Two weeks ago, Alex Murdaugh, Paul's dad and the county prosecutor, was shot in an apparent murder attempt when he was "changing a flat tire" on the roadside.
Yesterday we learned that he appears to have conspired with someone to shoot him because he wanted to commit suicide but also wanted to get the life insurance to his remaining son. Which failed on all kinds of levels.
It also turns out that he claims to be addicted to opioids, and is being investigated for embezzling millions of dollars.
Absolutely nuts. The whole thing. And hard to keep track of.
