You might think that democracies (even of a very discriminatory sort) have a licence to kill. Shireen Abu Aqla: UN says an Israeli shot killed Al Jazeera journalist (BBC) And now "the Middle East's only democracy" is going on one of its regular killing sprees in Gaza. Just the right moment when media attention is focused elsewhere.

Oh, the Chinese are no angels. The Ming Dynasty 14 - 17c was notoriously violent. The Manchus wiped out half the population. Later, the Taiping rebellion of the burning of the Summer Palace period we're talking about, 1851-1864, which killed around thirty million people, was probably the bloodiest civil war the world has ever seen. Even a young General Gordon was there.

"known for his high spirits, a combative streak and tendency to disregard authority and the rules if he felt them to be stupid or unjust, a personality trait that held back his graduation by two years when teachers decided to punish him for flouting the rules."
I think we'd get on TBH.

Born in my old manor, well, next to it. We were taught all about him at school, him being an impressive chap and all that. Frankly, as men go, he was pretty far out. Great man. One of the old 'spiritual' warriors prepared to stand on the front line with his men. How times change.
