I've conducted 1,223 funeral services - and spent one to two hours with each family/widow/widower discussing how they want the service to be conducted.
Very few want: "Died" they want "passed away". They all know he or she "died" but they want "passed away." Except for a few who say "do not, under any circumstances, say "passed away" - he/she Died!

Passed away is dodgy but just about on the right side. Passed on is very much spiritualist bollocks.

Same as sticking professional on the end of non professional jobs. Road sweeping professional or burger flipping professional

Agreed. Professional. Awful. Worse still as an adjective describing dull skills and behaviours.

Engineer, instead of technician.

Doctor, dentist, chartered accountant, chartered surveyor, architect .... any others?

Solicitors, I suppose.
Military officers don't count any more, I don't think. Maybe permanent, regular commissions, but even then I don't think they meet the criteria. Too low a bar, too little training and so few standards to stick to.

In some cases there are amateur and professionals doing the same thing but one gets paid the other doesn't, professional football player, and it's been like that since the 19th C so it passes muster, but "your hair styling professional is ready for you now" is wank

Oh yeah, that's a good point. Professional in the sense of making a living at it, but there's no real difference in that case between the footballer and the stylist.

Mind you, I think it's also important to distinguish between trained, competent and practiced tradespeople and enthusiastic amateurs or people whose training needs to be refreshed. Goodness me, I nearly said "practitioner" there.
Mrs.B's Auntie was her last week and suggested that Mrs. B have her hair cut and styles by Auntie's mate. Mrs. B was, as ever, entirely diplomatic and kind, but I could sense every cell in her body raging against the very idea.

It's an odd thing that, the suggestion by others that one has one's hair done. Apart from being a passive/aggressive insult, the control freakishness of it is odd.
