It does sound horrible, in a 1960s or 70s coup kind of way for the people who’re there. That combination of violence and chaos and, if you’re white, standing out quite dramatically and knowing that someone probably wants you dead and someone probably thinks you could be a useful pawn in some negotiation. And which others can just use in petty power-plays, and others still don’t want to touch because they don’t want to annoy their higher-ups. I remember reading old correspondents from the 60s and 70s where this kept happening.

After seeing OOTLG mention derivatives, I am reminded at my intense, burning white hot anger at the phrase "Political Calculus".

As in "Trump's trial totally changes the political calculus". Not only is it overused and worn out.

But, and this is what causes the anger* it's not f**k**g calculus. You mean "The political calculation". There's no derivative here, there's no integration, you're not working out what the rate of change of acceleration is. You're talking about adding up numbers, possibly at a push some statistics, although the odds are that anyone using the phrase "political calculus" hasn't the f**k**g foggiest idea what a standard deviation is. You're talking very, very simple arithmetic. Not calculus. It doesn't make you seem cleverer, and it doesn't make the stuff you're commenting on seem any more scientific, just because you use that word.
