More than a thousand metric tonnes of timber is afloat off the Sussex coast after going overboard from a Russian-registered cargo ship.
Coastguards said today that 1,500 metric tonnes of wood was in the sea off the south-east coast of England. A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said that at 8.15am the ship Sinegorsk reported that it had lost the wood around 14 miles off the coast of Newhaven, East Sussex.
He said it was too early to say if or where the timber would be washed up on the coast.
Various estimates put the load of wood lost by the Ice Prince at between 2,000 and 5,000 metric tonnes.

Remember when a tanker ran aground and lost it's cargo, motorbikes were washed ashore. People were cracking open wooden cases finding brand new undamaged motorbikes - then there was a sudden police presence as other valuable cargo came ashore!

that's a lot of timber! I think it counts a 'flotsam' so it's anyones. The slick of wood is floating in the English Channel in the direction of Kent

There's gonna be a hell of a lot of new garden sheds, garages, garden decking and fences built in Kent in time for summer.
Any jobbing joiners or capenters will be having a boom time this year.
