I was born in London and I am thankful that I no longer live there. I did live in Hackney which makes my relief understandable though.
I was brought up just a little way away in Tower Hamlets (Bow), and I'm similarly relieved I no longer live anywhere near the place.
How anyone can think of Hackney being cool is beyond me. It's a bloody frightening place to be, particularly after dark, and Mare Street is still dubbed 'Murder Mile' by the locals I believe.

how did the scandal affect you? any of you on here? Its not about the amount of money that makes corruption grand its about how far it stretches and how many people it affcts which in this case was few.

I lived just off Mare Street. Deepest, darkest Hackney. It was not cool. Neither was Tower Hamlets!

Ah pfft, I can't accept that something is only important to the extent to which it affects me. Otherwise virtually nothing is newsworthy.
My government covered up massive scale corruption and lied about their reasons for doing so, I think that's important and also fcuking annoying.

Its not about it being only important. I agree its a big deal that there were some dodgy happening going on with the BAE thing, but You would think diff if you experienced corruption on a personal basis everyday. Britain has corruption as does every other country, but in comaprison to the majority of Countries Britain is a pretty cool and easy place to live. Grand scale corruption is about how far it stretches and how many peoples lives it affects, not about the amount of money used to pay off people. But maybe im just being pedantic now about terminology of Grand scale corruption.

Of course, Britain is among the better of the world's nations in this regard, but I think we're getting worse. And it's just not good enough to say "Yeah well look at Zimbabwe it's worse there" because we really should be setting the goalposts higher than that.

whats getting worse? heh heh. Im just refering it to those who think we live in a pitt of doom, people say well go live elsewhere, but once you have moved else where you will soon start seeing that the grass always looks greener but its not true. Its about what you value and what we have in the uk is a very good system with problems, but nowhere near as many problems as the majority of other countries. After all this whole thread was based on the idea of what scares you about britain, and slowly decended into people discussing whats wrong with britain and corruption is not something that is a major factor to worry about in Britain as it doesnt affect many or the majority.

Threads meander. I have moved elsewhere and think the grass under my feet right now is very much greener, but yes, corruption isn't the greatest of the UK's woes.
Anyway then, the number one Scary Thing about Britain for me is the erosion of civil liberty.

I agree radge, we don't really realise what we have until it's gone theory. The UK isn't so bad, there are more plusses than minuses. We could be a helluva lot worse off compared to some countries. I still think we have a strong degree of patriotism, shame for some that their moral fibre is sinking to low depths though. So many these days tend to forget what really is important. We seem too happy to knock people these days, there isn't enough praise in our society any more, where's the incentive?

Nowt scares me about Britain.
The fact that we haven't really changed much in hundreds of years is a bit depressing.

From the outside looking in, you've become an overpriced, repressive state.
