Jobs dry up but Poles stay to reap the benefits. Polish workers losing their UK jobs in the economic downturn are choosing not to return home but to stay and take advantage of the generous benefits system. Immigrants from eastern Europe who have worked in Britain for 12 months or more can claim the full range of UK state benefits, including child and housing benefit and jobseekers' allowance. While many single Polish workers are expected to leave in the next year as jobs dry up, community leaders and recruitment bosses say large numbers of those with children are staying put to 'ride out the recession'. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1108806/Jobs-dry-Poles-stay-reap-benefits.html

Is Poland granting us the same benefits? I doubt it!
Sorry, but they should go back home now. Most left their families behind to come here and work, so it was never permanent. Now they can claim for loadsa kids back in Poland who never would have come here?

I guess most of the problem starts when these families come over here and increase their families, more babies and children, and therefore are "entitled" to all our benefits since they were born over here. I think it's time our benefit system was revised and more strictly monitored. Seems a bit too cushty these days.

And many of those 500,000 are currently working. With a strong Euro they will be better off out of the UK. This is the Daily Wail remember, so take with a pinch of salt.

With the weakness of the pound, and jobs being created in the Eastern European countries as firms move there for cheaper labour costs, they will very soon be a lot better off at home.

There will be a mass Polish exodus out of the UK and back to Poland the way things are going. Many are leaving already and going back to their homeland. To think they came over here for jobs, better working conditions and pay . . . .

Wouldn't be the first to find the streets aren't really paved with gold.
If they are entitled to stay, they are welcome to stay, IMHO. That's what entitlement means.

Too right it is. The benifit system should be scrapped all together and until it is you'll continue to find more and more will use it to the detriment of all. We have reached the point in the UK where there is absolutely no iincentive to either work or look after yourself, whatsoever. Not only is there no incentive , we've reached a point where its rediculous to even consider working legaly etc.

I completely agree with you there yord! We live in a society where people can be financially better off if they stay at home, sit on their butts all day and watch chat shows, than work hard and earn a decent living! There is little incentive for young people today to study and do well for themselves when they see dossers wearing the latest designer gear when they can't afford it! Makes me sick.

In that case, the problems lie in the economics of the work market, not in the benefits system. Wages are too low, not benefits too high. Benefits are aimed at providing a minimum ot live decently. If wages are so low it is more sensible to stay on benefits, then wages should go up.
Bleedin' capitalists. Wreck everything, they do.

Unless you intend to ban all imports and go self sufficent, increased wages would only lead to increased unemployment. While wages need to be increased they do so only because the levels of taxation are too high. The economy is global and you can not work for a pound if others are working for a penny.Well you can , but the result is what you are seeing now.

That just a facet of the problem caused by capitalism. Wage bill too high? Employ (if that is the right word) ten year olds in China to do it for you. Everyone else has to follow suit. COnsumers accept cheaper goods and do their best not to make the connection between the cheap DVD player and the fact they don't have a job making them any more. Like I said, bleedin' capitalists, wreck everything, they do.
