Nurse suspended for prayer offer A Christian nurse from Weston-super-Mare has been suspended for offering to pray for a patient's recovery. Community nurse Caroline Petrie, 45, says she asked an elderly woman patient during a home visit if she wanted her to say a prayer for her. The patient complained to the health trust about Mrs Petrie who follows the Baptist faith. She was suspended, without pay, on 17 December and will find out the outcome of her disciplinary meeting next week. Power of prayer Mrs Petrie, who carries out home visits in North Somerset, said she had asked the patient if she would like a prayer said for her after she had put dressings on the woman's legs. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/somerset/7863699.stm

Oh good grief, why the need to complain? Laugh, sure, but honestly.
This:
"Mrs Petrie says that she has taken advice from the Christian Legal Centre, which aims to protect the religious freedom of people who follow the Christian faith. "
is a bit grim though. Another religious lot making sure they've got their eyes peeled for any opportunity to play the oppressed victim card.

Seems a bit heavy handed to suspend her without pay !
I suppose, in her eyes, she was only offering additional comfort and support. A simple 'No Thank You' should have been enough rather than a formal complaint.

What the f*ck is happening to this country under Labour? Someone offers to say a prayer for someone so they decide to become so offended by that that they feel the need to complain? And the management are so uttelry pathetic and weak that they feel the need to investigate this instead of saying 'Oh don't be so silly. I'm sure she means well', end of story.

The complaint apparently was not that the patient was offended herself, she just thought someone else might be. Quelle surprise.

The sight of that Christian legal.... will give Ricky a heart attack.
I think the old woman was pathetic, why complain because you think somebody may be offended? And why on earth would anybody be offended? Even if you weren't religious would you care? I wonder if there is a bit more to this story...

Actually in defence of the patient, she merely mentioned it the next day to another nurse, I guess it was that nurse who took it further. Possibly because she has a reason to dislike Ms Petrie, who knows.

Just goes to show the appalling Christophobia of the Establishment. If it was a Muslim nurse they'd have given her a thousand pounds.

Did I mention how much I hate Britain?
Every single element of this is wrong.
The stupid nurse offering to pray The stupid patient thinking it was worth mentioning to another nurse The stupid other nurse for complaining higher up The retarded authorities for actually suspending a perfectly competent nurse who was just trying to be decent The fact there's a christian legal bollox who exist at all The fact it gets reported as some PC gone mad thing rather than just utter stupidity all the way up and down the line, from everyone.

The NHS like a lot of organisations views the various employment acts as obstacles to overcome rather than guidelines for practice.
Since the 70s, nurses in the NHS have been subjected to disciplinary action of ostensibly frivolous grounds. I recall many such cases when I worked there. I was, for a short time, a shop steward and these were very common.
They all seem to have similar characteristics.
1. The nurse will recently have had some conflict with a senior member of staff. Might be social, personality clash, expression of some attitude or other.
2. The incident will almost always be frivolous. Generally quite common place.
3. The nurse will always be charged with Serious Professional Misconduct.
4. The original allegation will frequently be the result of trawling for complaints and the senior nurse will invariably order other staff to write complaints. Numerous examples exist where other staff have been ordered to re-write complaints.
I recall one case of a nurse with 30 years experience being charged with Serious Professional Misconduct because she apparently hadn't given sufficient support to an 18 year old nursing assistant.
She was eventually judged to be incapable of doing the job she had done for 30 years.
Another case where a nurse of 25 years experience was reported to the GNC and lost her licence to practice because she had reassured a dying patient that it was OK to let go.
The way that complaint was written it sounded as if she had yelled at the patient, ordering them to die. Whereas, what she actually did was no more than many nurses, with experience in terminal care do.
At the risk of offending any nurses on this forum, nursing is a dead profession and needs to be brought to an end.

No I disagree with most of you
I think the nurse was a complete insensitive cow - asking the patient if she would like her to pray for her. Totally unprofessional! .... it could cause uneccessary concern & anxiety to some people imagining themselves to be worse than they thought. the supercillious idiot go pray for yourself nurse to be more sensitive & not so self righteous

Nah. I'm as bolshy unreligious as they come, and any time anyone asks if I mind if they pray for me, I just tell them "Go ahead if it will make you feel better. It'll make no difference to me at all."

Thats what I thought at first, but she did ask so presumably the patient consented, but to lose wages etc is just silly....supposing it had been a Muslim nurse that downed bedpan etc and prayed to Mecca for a few mins....would they have been suspended ?

No no the patient refused the nurses prayers. and as for your second point totally irrelevant If the nurse had been Muslim & needed to pray, I guess that's her business - it was the offer to PRAY FOR THE PATIENT that was wrong
