well I've just looked him up and I can't say I would have looked at him and thought " he looks just like the golliwog on the jam jar " but I can't see it as being a terribly insulting thing to say as I always thought golliwogs were cute .Mind you ,I am one of these daft people who merely sees a golliwog as just being a cute doll with a slightly comical name

I'd have thought everyone would not use that phrase because it's just not acceptable.
Who said it is not acceptable, you?, the media? it's acceptable to all those who wish to use it and as for you creating merry hell if someone used it in front of you i would reply in kind and told you if you didn't want to hear it go somewhere else.

Not me definitely, it was roundly regarded as unacceptable by all thinking people even when I was a kid. The chances of us ever ending up in a social situation together are negligible, but if you were to say that at work and then respond as you claim you would, I wouldn't have to work with you for much longer, so knock yerself out.

Nah. person is offensive. I am without doubt an arsehole on occasions, but I'm not nearly enough of one to use language that insults someone's race. I'm a skiver and I hate work but I'm way too professional to even do it in jest in a work context. Etc.

But we're not talking about w og and whether that is offensive or not .We could of course -Personally ,I always think its the intent behind words that makes them offensive or not rather than the words themselves. Here the talk is about golliwog. Now ,for years a golliwog was merely that -a cute soft toy .No one ever noticed that it was BLACK and that it's name was golly + w og .Till one of your " thinking " people came along and said " well you do remember why those dolls were made in the first place and why they were called that don't you ? It's highly offensive to black people " .Well ,for a start no one had bloody remembered till they were reminded and second I bet it was a white person who decided that a black person should feel offended by it and if I was a black person Id be far more offended by that than a stuffed toy loved by many for no other reason than that it was nice

PC has certainly come to something when you can't insult someone because of their race without being called "racist".
