Libby, the reason for the difference is the history of the word. Plus it's only the case in britain, I'm sure in other places 'Paki' hasn't taken on the negative connotations it has here.
Basically we can blame skinhead thugs who appropriated the word as a term of abuse for people of South Asian descent (they didn't have to be from Pakistan). Most Asians who will have heard the term will have heard it being thrown at them in an offensive manner, hence why it is deemed at best to be incredibly, incredibly outdated and at worst, racist.
The same cannot be said of the term 'Brit' hence why (in England) its use isn't really offensive.

I get your point vania and agree with you. I also think it's time we left Harry alone, surely he will be a bit more careful after all this publicity. The point is that he will never really be "off duty" from royalty, he will always be followed and watched for every slip.

The saying 'sticks and stones' is the stupidest saying ever.
And Assegai your point is meaningless. Just because you are happy being called every name under the sun does not mean others are or should be. Accept that people are different and learn basic manners in how to treat your fellow man!

I think the press are trying to latch on to anything concerning possible rascism and the royal family. It's getting quite tedious now, because there really isn't anything in these stories.

Its all about the way the word is used. Words are meaningless without meaning behind them. And im not talking about the dictionary definition meaning, im talking about the way its said. That gives meaning to words and unless its said in a nasty or hurtful way there should never be a problem, but saying that the general population are a bunch of plebs and we could all do with a chill pill once in a while

lets see, we had three black guys, one chinese and one asian in our battery alone, Sam was known as withaspoon, or spooney because he ate everything with a spoon! Tam was called goggles due to the appaling glasses he used to wear Lenny was known as Um Bongo, dont know why he never said Lin went by Chink and Saraj was called Bindi, Im 6ft 4" and was generally called Titch, if there were other taffs about.
Basically army nicknames generally go by differences that make people stand out, Chink was the only Chinese guy in the whole regiment so he got lumbered early on, Bindi is self explanatory as he was the only Asian, but as there were three black guys they got nicknames based on other noticable features or traits! None of it was racist or derogatory, noone ever complained and general abuse to each other is the norm in the Army, so personally I think this is a witch hunt by sh*t for brains who look for things to be offended about!
