I suppose when the Scots, N.Irish and Welsh get independence we will have the cross of St George as Englands flagI'm no expert on flags, but now you mention it, doesn't Northern Ireland have the cross of St George too, bit with something like this in the middle?

Ah, is that what it is? Just googled it, and yes, that looks more familiar. So what exactly does it symbolise?

It's rooted in Gaelic legend. There are various versions but the most widely attributed is that there was a race between two rivals for the Irish throne. When it came close to the finish the race was so close that O'Neill cut off his hand and threw it over the winning line and declared himself the winner.
