Gang of children - some as young as TEN - caught slowly roasting puppies over bonfire Shocked and huddled together for safety, these puppies are lucky to be alive after being saved from an act of almost unbelievable barbarity. A gang of youths had seized the seven-week-old brother and sister and were slowly roasting them over a bonfire on a canal bank. Yelping in panic and distress as their fur began to burn, the pair struggled desperately to escape the children's clutches. The commotion attracted a walker who ran over to the bonfire and ordered the gang to release them immediately. Melanie Johnson, 32, said: 'I just could not believe the cruelty being shown by these kids. If I hadn't turned up, I think they would have burned the dogs alive.' Miss Johnson, from Rochdale, added: 'Most of the kids were aged 12, 13 or older. But some were as young as ten. I was ripping mad and still am to think that anyone - least of all children - could do this.' She took the two puppies from the bank and carried them to the safety of her home before wrapping them in a towel and taking them to an RSPCA shelter. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1135591/Gang-children--young-TEN--caught-slowly-roasting-puppies-bonfire.htmlcheck out the photo of the two little darling puppies

The cross-bred pups were examined by a vet after the incident in Newbold, Rochdale on Friday and were found to be in generally good health.
Jean Spencer, the RSPCA shelter manager, said: 'The puppies are only seven weeks old and still smelled of smoke from the bonfire when they arrived.
'The fur on one of them was singed and the other has a small hernia. Fortunately, they are going to be fine.'
She added: 'To think that children could be so cruel is really disgusting. The puppies are absolutely gorgeous. Everyone here has fallen in love with them.'
The male puppy has been named Guy and his sister Cinders.
They will now go to a shelter in Halifax to be re-homed.
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

...and we are having a debate about raising the age of criminal responsibility in this country? Is anyone suggesting that the 10 year olds don't know that that is WRONG?

Actually, with camera phones it would be tempting to take their picture as evidence before intervening BUT taking a picture of children is considered a potentially more criminal action by the adult despite the actions of the kids

If i'd stumbled across the kids i would have spit roasted them above the fire instead. mental kids. But Kids none the less. Its not about knowing whats wrong its about giving people a chance to right teir wrongs if kids get a criminal record at such a young age then some will follow the label they have been given. I dont think its right that we can imprison children and treat them as criminals cause it does nothing positive for them. The only people who should be locked up are people who are a danger to society. Everyone else shoud be put to work on various projects and our countruy could see many srevices develop and get better because of their helpful pinishment.

these kids ought to beaten until they bleed. No really I mean it.
I thought I was hallucinating when I saw that "age of criminal responsibilty to be lowered" - are these people insane? It should be lowered.

possibly a good beating would do all kids good. I mean most of us were brought up on a spanking, a clipped ear, whatever. And we turned out alright. I think...(looks around suspiciously)

If they were planning on eating the pups, then it's no different to cooking lamb or beef. No problem.
If they were just doing it for fun, they should be taught not to waste food that they were cooking, and there's probably a council food inspector on the way round now.

Convince me it is not prudent to bring back birching. It is long overdue. Millions like me are sick and tired of the pathetic bleatings of assorted do-gooders. Time for them to just shut up while we bring our youth back under control.

It makes you wonder just what sort of adults those little scrotes will become. It turns my stomach when I think of it.

Nah it was a bonfire, and yeah bonfires and puppies go together like jizz and blood. Making bonfires is all part of youth, and adding in a litle puppy fun, is nothing to worry about. heh heh harmless adolescent pranks

It made me feel sick when i read this news story today. At 10 years old children know the difference between wrong and right. Remember the case of little 3yr old Jamie Bulger who was tortured and killed by two 10 year old lads?! The law is an ass. The Bulger murder boys have been let out of prison and now lead a new life in anonymity. The kids who tortured the two puppies will get just a slap on the wrist! We need tougher punishments for juveniles.

If the kids aren't punished now they'll get up to even worse as they get older. Everybody knows it. Except the damp patches who seem to be wielding too much influence. I 'm not sure how they've managed it. Possibly nobody else has too much time on their hands and a desire to fcuk around with society.

It would be interesting to take a look at what the parents of these kids are like. Not that I would excuse anybody of attempting to do such a hideous thing to young, defenceless animals. They're certainly of an age to have known exactly what they were doing, and had I been the one to catch them, then at least one of them would have faced my considerable wrath.

I know what you mean cheyenne. I think it's the easiest way to rationalise their actions, that they had violent parents who go around kicking dogs, throwing cats around etc. The trouble is some of these monster kids actually come from what we all term normal backgrounds. It's not always the case that their parents behave like scum also.
