A spokesman for the estate said: "The management of the shop have said they did not intend to offend anyone by selling this product and have apologised if any offence has been caused."
I must be missing something here. The report says the gollys have sold well, mainly to older people who love them from their childhood days. I don't see anywhere in that report any reference to anyone having actually complained to the Sandringham shop staff about the sale of those dolls. Now, however, because someone gets over sensitive about an off the cuff remark overheard in a private conversation not connected in any way to Sandringham, the shop manager feels it necessary to remove the items from sale and issue an apology for offending people who have clearly not been offended.
The pathetic, lilly-livered Sandringham estate management typify everything which is wrong with this Country. Just another example of why I gave up getting angry about this Country being a soft touch many years ago.

I don't think anyone did complain to the shop Victor, it was purely based on the furore that ensued after Carol Thatcher's remark off-camera. Perhaps the shop or Palace officials thought it best to be careful and withdraw the gollies from sale. Can you imagine the newspaper headlines "Queen in Golly Folly!" lol!

The PC brigade should find better things to do, like get a life. I'm sure these people together with the CRE cause more problems than thet solve.

I'm not sure what 'problems' the PC brigade have caused here apart from causing people to whinge about the PC brigade and I'm fine with that.
Now on to more serious matters.
Ok, first I thought it was coincidence but now I'm not so sure. Is there targetted advertising aimed at thread titles? If not why does the link at the top show ebay selling golliwogs?

Absolutely pitiful, they even bought it up on Question Time tonight, and one woman was so revolted by the doll, she spat out 'that word'.
Come on folks, what other ordinary, everyday item in your house can make you be accused of an 'ist', 'ism' - whatever!

Did you notice that even the Tory agreed that it was a thoroughly inappropriate term, and the only real question was one of whether the sanction was correct?

I just don't understand the desperation people have to defend golliwogs, whether it's the dolls, the word etc...
I have decided it must be a generational thing as the only people commenting have made referencing to having a doll 30/40 years ago and it was 'harmless' etc...
I guess by the time I entered the world the racial connotations were much fixed into place.
That said I think people have missed the point regarding the sanction.
a) It wasn't actually 'in private' as she was in a green room which isn't the same as being round at her mates house. I generally work out at clients. But if I say something deemed to be offensive when not in front of the client but back in the office I can still be censured.
b) The comparisons to Ross are false as the problem appears to be that Thatcher refused to apologise. Ross did.
Although it's strange it seems to have created such a news storm. Still anything that keeps that ghastly Goody of the front pages is a ok with me.

They're not defending the word "golliwog" as such Vania, but rather the right to use it without being branded racists, by wankers.

Isn't humpty dumpty derogatory to fat people like look at humpty over there !! we have had all this before about Gollies !! Robertsons jam etc .. carol thatchers comment was neither racist or in bad taste she was just stating a fact that in her eyes this person looked like a golly !! so what...... all this PC crap gets my dander up it's all bloody nonsence all created by people with nothing better to do so as to give a public perception of racial harmony. when we all know underneath both sisdes of the coin call each other nigger , honkey etc!etc! do the sensible people give a monkeys ? no they just get on with it and laugh it off Carol thatcher looks a bit like a poodle crossed with a rottwieler now the doggy set will have a field day

As in the black rap group NWA? The 'WA' bit stands for "With Attitude". Guess what the N stands for?

Because surely if you use it about someone, in full knowledge that that person finds the term offensive/racist whatever, then that's what you're being? Feral: In response, no. Because in the manner is which you use I have only heard it used between people who have some sort of relationship. What friends/acquaintances say to each other is entirely their own business imho.

Oh and using rap music as an example is crap for the reason that every single rap CD you pick up in a shop which has copious amounts of the 'N' word always carries the following warning "Warning, explicit language...."
And every single rap song which contains the N word has a clean version which is played on radio.
And very recently Nas, rap artist was censured for wanting to call his album 'N*gger' and has had to make do with something else.

Oh don't make me laugh. Where on thise warning labels does it say "explicit language" and then refer to it as that N word? Nowhere. You will also find these albums contain many instances of the F word, the C word, Pussy as used in a different context to a cat, etc., etc. I have a young son and I've heard the albums, so I'm fully aware of their content.
The warning may relate to the N word or it may not. As it doesn't give a specific explanation as to what words prompted the warning to be put there, we don't know, and you've just made an assumption.

On the very front label it says explicit language which includes the N word. it is not an 'assumption' because in the clean version of the songs, as I have pointed out, they remove it.
If not why did Nas have to change the name of his album? Why is it removed from the clean version of rap songs? If what you say is correct there would be no need to do so would there?
