that 'supposed' avatar has been around for a long time-this is a fist i've noticed the giffy being used as one though Get out!! I can only just deal with typing about avatars..... but if I have to start typing giffy regularly now then I might just cry.

Actually, gifs aren't necessarily animated. It's just a propriety image format that allows for animation. And uses indexed colour rather than dithering for its compression, so it's very good for blocks of single colours, but rubbish for photos.

More from Andy's Nerdy Book Of Imaging And Stuff later. There's quite an impressive MODIS image of the smoke plumes from the Aussie fires, frinstance.

It scares me that there are swathes of words in my native tongue of which I have no understanding. I mean I recognise all the words in Andy's post, but I have no idea what they mean in that context.
Much like the following "status update" from one of my mates today:
(He) is battling win2k8 cluster iscsi target names. anyone done disimilar target name multipathing before.
I mean uh?

There's some really silly threads suddenly appearing in News - what are you lot on??? It's not like there's a lack of news just now. Puffin is right about that avater, it's been going for the whole of this decade at least - always makes me think of Y.M.C.A. by The Village People - it's fuuuuun!!

How come everyone else is allowed to clutter up the news board with silly, irrelevant threads, but not me?
It's discrimination, that's wot it is. Racists.
