Another nail in the coffin for the BNP's failed attempt to look respectable. Even the CofE sees them for a bunch of racist thugs you wouldn't want to touch with a bargepole.

I can't really imagine why any clergy would want to join the BNP (and it seems there is only about half a person this applies to), but it really bugs me when people ban a legtimate legal party. I think it's a real kick for free speech and probably makes it all the more appealing.

The BNP is NOT the Tory party, eric. And, actually, most of the clergy I know lean towards Labour or the Liberals.

[/i][/blockquote] They aren't 'banning the BNP,' Dwad, they are saying, "If you want to be in our club, you have to stick by the rules, and one of those rules is that you can't be a member of that club, because to be in that club you have to believe or think things that mean you can't be in our club." Just like you can' be a Pretestant and a Catholic at the same time, or a Christian and a Marxist. If you accept one set of principles, it excludes holding another.

IMO a particular religion poses a far greater threat to the country than the BNP ever will. Yet no one would dare to suggest that membership of an intollerent, anti-democratic, nasty death cult should be banned from public life.

I suspect that the CofE Synod probably does have restrictions on its clergy being Muslims.

If the church can bar people from its clergy based on gender and sexuality I see no reason why political beliefs should be exempt.
