I'm gonna enter for next years Turner Prize ....... My entry will be a giant 100 ft high sculpure of a giant forearm and fist clutching a bunch of grubby £50 notes. It will symbolise the greed and avarice of our leaders ... (MP's, Bankers and Health & Safety exec's). Once I've been paid I'll construct it out of Plaster of Paris and piss off in my yacht before it melts in the rain.

"Angel of The South"
ffs, what this country needs is an injection of imagination.
If the proles really need a usless effigy, at least think of a decent name.
All this effigy building is a Communist/Socialist thing. Look in any Communist country to see the proof.

You know, The Angel of the North had all this when it was being manufactured, but you ask anyone from Noocassle and they will tell you that when they see that on the A1 they know they are home and feel a sense of local patriotism. I must admit to feeling a sense of finally arriving in the real north of England when I see it.
Many others felt the same way about the cooling towers by Sheffield that were recently blown up, I actually miss them too.
However, this horse thing is really naff tbh, OK, have an emblem of the south of England if you must, but the horse they are showing looks like something from a kids toy chest! Have a sculpture by all means, but something that is more Henry Moore, and abstract, would blend in better.

one question that needs to asked is why is so mkuch of this large public are a bit on the crap side? The b of the bang is falling to bits after only being up for a couple of years and that cost miliions, and what next after a big horse, what other large scale farm animal can we expect?

Art must have been much more fun in the old days when you got the really good painters cutting off their own ears. Nowadays you just get some self-advertising dink like Banksy being so incredibly radical and cutting-edge something or other all over the place.
What exactly is arty about this large scale version of My Little Pony? I can't see where the 2 million quid goes. Are there plans to include a saddle and rider as optional extras at some point? What about a nose-bag? Or a pile of dung at the back end? Might be better to leave out the horse and just erect the dungpile.

Must be an Illuminati symbol - after all, 2012 isn't far off now so symbols will be popping up all over the place.

I was up at uni in Durham and always loved the angel of the north. It is just really striking. I don't like this as much but I can see that it may eventually have the same effect on me as the angel.
I generally don't like huge ridiculous over-priced art and such but actually I can see that things like this just give life a bit of flavour.

Leaving aside the cost and do we need it bits, I'm not sure what would be more appropriate for a giant effigy in a county than the county's own symbol.

White horses are pretty symbolic of English heritage, particularly in the southern counties.

If we're going to be spending lots of money on ornamental things they should be huge and employ lots of people in the making of them.
Britain needs a pyramid.

Come on then? Just what should be build as an emblem to South England? I think the white horse is just too 'toy box' looking, and something way more artistic and sculptured would look better. Something that will be seen for miles around and defines that part of the UK. I am sure there are some good, and amusing ideas in here somewhere!

I think this is ace. And exactly the kind of stuff we should be building in the recession (a few new railways and stuff would be good too, but might take too long to get off the ground)
