Haha I was about to point that out Martel. Tarrant sounds like he's - how should I put this - quite young. But I don't think he is. In that case, even you know more than Tarrant on this subject. I think you mentioned you lecture at a university, but I didn't think you were in the Science Department. If not, you are better read in science than Tarrant

This is where you got stuck last time Tarrant. Genes mutate by chance. Natural selection CHOOSES the mutations which remain. Natural selection, therefore, is the antithesis of chance, even if the mutations which it preserves came about by chance.
Somehow, I doubt that's going to get through either.

Science all the way up until 2nd year of my Undergrad degree, when I dropped out because it involved about 30 hours of lectures a week and started an Economics degree instead, which was about 5 hours.
Wish I'd carried on, but still love it and read avidly, particularly the exciting physics stuff in cosmology and quantum theory.

I think Tarrant interprets Darwins theory as such so that it fits into his own indisputable view of reality.
I'm with omni in finding Einstein's theories on time and space to be way more mindblowing.

In fairness, I guess you could say that the ground-breaking Tarrant Critique of Darwinism is correct insofar as if there were no chance mutations, then there could be no natural selection.
But then there'd not be much life either.

Speaking of cool theories, there are a couple physicists that have postulated that matter is formed when light "slows down".

I attempted to make this clear but I apologise if it was not. Einstien sought a notion that would make it all predictable until finally accepting that it isn't. It's about chance.

No, natiral selection doesn't choose anything. Those mutatations which are beneficial to the organism give the organism a better chance in the fight for survival. Evolution is just a notion. It has no consciousness and makes no decisions.

I was referring to the evolution of the universe. Then, you are completely off target in talking about Darwin.

Damn it. That's the local bus timetable out the window. It is mindless and makes no decisions. Still, it's approximately correct and a useful guide to actually getting a bus.

Evolution is just a notion? Yet mankind has succeeded in evolving plants and animals. Does that mean we are one up on "God"? Maybe after his 6 days of labor he was too knackered to go on creating anything new?

Maybe in things like the cultivation of new plants. They didn't happen by accident, man brought them about.
