Will a Sat Nav bought here work in the USA?? Found out car hire over there costs more when they come with Sat Navs and I'm economising!

As long as the Sat Nav has the US maps installed, yes it will work.
Getting the US maps might be the problem. I have never seen one advertised with US maps. You will be might be able to buy them from the manufacturer. Best I can advise, pick out a couple you like the look of and check the web site out.

I bought a UK & Europe satnav recently and looked on the website to see if you could download Australia maps. The good news - yes you can. The bad news - it costs £175 which is a lot more than I paid for the satnav in the first place.

I am finding on initial searches that they do seem to want payment, and me being tight, doesn't want to pay! I know rental cars in the USA have Sat Nav, but many are getting canny and charging for them per day as an extra, especially for visitors. I wannit Freeeee!!!!!

Our satnav came with US maps and it was great - One thing we found out in the US though is that you can bargain with most anyone who wants to sell you something - especially if they think you really aren't fussed about having it.. Plus some retailers have discounts for overseas visitors.. It's worth a try - or as suggested - get a map.. Most car hire places have them for free.. [glow=red,2,300]ker[/glow]

Maps?? Look, it's simple really, when I am driving, and he, possibly, would be navigating, with maps he can't read - and as usual 1/2 mile behind where we actually are! I don't want to spend all my time backtracking, I would sooner have a Sat Nav Lady (yes Lady) telling me in advance when I should be turning off the road - not sat there umming and ahhing about weather I should have gone left, right, or upwards! Oh, and maps are fine if I am alone - but he will insist on being helpful...................

BTW, my GPS thing will not correctly take me home, it always tries to take me down a road that does not connect to my street. you can't always rely on the things, maps work better

SatNav can be unpredictable to say the least. Ours worked brilliantly in Paris and then completely packed in whilst we visited Southampton! Trouble is i'm not very good at mapreading! lol!

Sat Navs are a bit like maps, they need updating often, and an up to date map should always be in the car for further reference.
Even Google maps have got it wrong now and then!

My experience of driving in the US is that the road signage is poor out of cities so, if you want to get to where you are going eg Dulles Airport, it might not be a bad thing.
Do they, however, avoid danger areas in cities or do they route you on the quickest which might include gangstaland?

My GPS does a fair job of taking me to most public places in towns/citys, it sometimes has problems taking me to homes in subdivisions,
you chose if you want it to take the "shortest" or the route with most main roads. I don't know if it will avoid gangstaland, I'd worry if it tried to get off the freeway and through the hood in New York, or Detroit or most any large city.
