Dubai has the money to spend, plenty of land to expand into and no need for planning applications.
(and the weather is warmer - no contest)

Six runways planned for an airport in Dubai, whereas Heathrow are struggling to get a third in place. No contest.

Can't say i'm bothered in the slightest.
Incidentally there was probably one of the most abject and pathetic debates on Newsnight yesterday about the Heathrow third runway/Plane Stupid protests between two nomarks that would have shamed a sixth form argument.

Planes are being flown half full or even empty just so airlines can keep their slots. How is this conducive to a capacity airport?

Perhaps the missing passengers couldn't get past the protesters outside the front door ?

The problem Dubai has as being a major international hub is that, well, it's 5 hours from Europe, 12 hours from the East coast of the US (and more from the west), many hours from the far east, and basically, not really that near to where most people with money on business flights actually want to go. Who would go from Europe to the US via Dubai? Maybe for people travelling to the far east from Europe, or to Africa from Europe, it makes sense. But no many other places.

What about all the billionaire Captains of Industry, Sports stars and assorted celebs who live in Dubai ?
They need to travel back to their office / sports field / film shoot etc.

Excuse me if I'm missing something but if passengers are prepared to fly to Dubai to get to Europe, why cannot the airport authorities build a decent airport out in the sticks, say near Swindon, and build a high speed railway to London?
Why does everything need to be crammed into the limited space in London?

Bad move, Dubai's money is going to be gone shortly, we're going to make oil obsolete, those cities in arabia are going to become the arab version of Old West ghost towns.

If Dubai is a viable transit point for Europe, then it really doesn't matter if it has much cash or not. People will go there simply because it's the transit point.
That still doesn't answer the question, Why London?

The Emirates a ghost town ?........... Are you mad ?
Dubai and possibly Bahrein will take over as the holiday destination of choice (clear waters, fantastic coral reefs, literally thousands of miles of beaches, some of the best hotels in the world) and the Med will become a poluted backwater.
