Good question. I guess it could be that some women are born carers, and think they can help or change someone to be a better person. Sadly it seldom happens and they just end up on the end of a battering ram until things go too far.
There's really nothing you can do, you either hang around waiting for the inevitable (could be forever), or leave it be and get on with your life.
