Council Tax!
We were late paying the Council Tax, and issued with a final demand.
Paid an installment but got issued with a Court Summons the day after.
Paid the entire balance within two weeks but they've billed me for court costs of £60, despite the fact it's all paid and I'm not even due in court until the 14th April.
These buggers seem to think I'm liable for court costs before the court have even made judgement!
Gaaah I hate them.

You shouldn't have let it get to the final demand. If you are having difficult in paying, ring them up sometimes they will give you time to pay.

Yeah but the final demand was just a few weeks after the due date, and just an oversight anyway.

Direct Debits for all the absolute essential bills do help.
Does your council allow you to pay your Council tax bill by monthly direct debit ?

Ahh, Direct Debits!! Especially those to Power companies, don't you just love 'em! They can just put in any figure they like, they can owe you money and still raise your DD. They are taking £300 a month from us, owe us £560, and won't reduce the payments they lay down. So, I am going in for a bit of dramatic action against them. Just thankful that due to NuL my money in the bank 'aint working, so I'm not losing interest .................. Whoopeeeee!!!

I was late paying one instalment on my water rates bill last year(N.W. Water). I've now received my bill for 2009 / 2010.
They wanted 6 months in advance payable on the 1st April and the balance paid by September ...... OR ELSE !
It seems I've lost the right to pay by monthly instalments because of ONE late payment. Can anyone tell me of any private company that can legaly demand advance payment for services that have yet to be received ?

Hmm, not sure about that. I'd have thought they'd have the right to supply services on their own terms, unless as a monopoly (are they?) they have a duty to.
Yeah should have done direct debit, but like Sushi... Avoid variable DDs with power companies. As Douglas Adams once said, never send the electricity company money, it only attracts attention to yourself.
