I think that's where the dodgy numbers come in. How do they calculate the psi from that?

I assume the same way you do when you put that measuring device between a clamp, say, or in a riveting machine, or all those other places such a device is used. Read the numbers off the digital display.

How to know the difference between a Crocodile and an Alligator.
One will see you later the other in a while.

Because it's pressure, not weight. Presumably through the point of the teeth - it's the same force from the jaw, but the surface area is small because of the teeth meaning it breaks through.

That's what I was driving at really. I would have thought that a bare measure of force would be clearer.

It's just standardised for engineering purposes, isn't it? It's sort of easy to visualise with an animal bite because we all have a reasonable idea the size of the animal. For general engineering purposes it's helpful to have a standard to compare against.

And the PSI at the points of the teeth will be far greater than say at gum level. Complex.

Yeah, it all seems a bit hyperbolic, which was my original point. See, that hippo is said to be able to tear a Croc in two (not sure I ever believed that). And also, it's largely about absolute size: what about pound for pound?
Dunno, it's probably fine, but I've never found these ratings particularly convincing.

I imagine a lot of the animal ones are estimates based on muscle mass, bone length etc. You know the length of levers (or levvers as Andy no doubt now says...) and fulcrums and an estimate of how much force x amount of muscle can apply in animal y of z mass. There's probably an app.

Crocks kill their pray by drowning them I seam to remember, drag em under then spin round, they have the strength to hold on, but I'm not sure they bite chunks off like a bear or a shark.
Also I expect the bite pressure would not be even, and if the blokes head was right at the end of the muzzle as opposed to closer to the jaw hinge it might have been easier to escape.

I think that's right and crocs also leave prey underwater until they soften up a bit. Same as we do with beef, I guess.

that time of year, i guess. it seems every other day the media puts out blaring headlines 'shark attack, shark attack!' which of course scares people and makes them want to kill every shark on the planet.

This bloke's got a load of videos of juvenile great whites hanging around surfers and paddle boarders, not doing very much.

The name 'shark' is a bit onomatopoeic which doesn't help... ssssshhhaaaaRRRRK... If they were called something less agitating, like say, wilfred, do you suppose people might be less scared of them?
