Sharks do get attracted to fish wriggling on a spear and will sometimes harass spearfishermen. They don't usually attack but that could be what happened here.

I've always been a bit surprised that there haven't been attacks in those island groups really.
I went into a bakery in Funchal once and nothing had a price on it. The lady in the shop said everything was €1. I chose an item and she asked for €1.50.
When I queried this, she said: "oh, that's my dearer cake".
