Kudos to the pilot. Last off, did TWO walk throughs to make sure the plane was empty, apparently. Awesome professionalism.
And he's even got a name worthy of a hero: Chesley B “Sully” Sullenberger III. It would totally not be cool if he'd been called Dan Andrews or soemthing nondescript.

Incredible that he chose the River Hudson to ditch, it could've been a massacre had the plane ditched on land! Incredible professionalism, bravery and presence of mind. Hats off to the pilot! Amazing!

This is an awesome story. Great pics, great outcome, dead geese, New York metropolitian authorities actually seeming competent.
I still am astonished that people don't like flying. Here we have a crappy US airline flying a probably ill maintained plane, as they're practically bankrupt. We have a pilot with a comedy name and moustache, who clearly can't be the sharpest tool in the box. Flying over New York, landing in a freezing, miasmically polluted river.
And yet everyone survived.
How safe is that?

this gives me so much more faith in pilots thats an impressive landing. very well done. I always think that if youu have a mid air problem kiss your life goodbye. But this is yet more proof that something can be done. Well done good pilot captain SIR!!!

Fantastic effort all round by this Pilot - even waiting until everyone was off the plane then double checking before he got out himself.
By all accounts the landing he made on the water was text book as non of the plane broke up (which is expected when a plane ditched apparently).
Fantastic job done too by the rescue services to make sure they were there early enough to prevent people getting swept away/dying of hypo in the cold water...

I'm impressed. Give the pilot something nice. And also something for the people who built the plane. It's nice to see some competence still in the world. And slap some liberal about the head just to balance things up a bit.

there was some airoexpert on the telly last night who just couldnt belive how the plane stayed in one piece, apparently its the first time ever a commercial jet has landed on water and not broak up. And the some of the survivers were great on the interviews, some bloke this mornong saying he'd feels like he should be shocked and traumatised, but he just cant stop smiling cos he aint dead

I suppose this means a lot more people will be paying attention during the safety briefings in future.

What a great guy, a true Captain...kept cool and gave only one calm instruction "Brace for impact" without a shred of emotion in his voice. I read he's even studied the psychology of crew reaction in emergency situations - wonderful man. Obviously should receive some sort of award & formal recognition and well deserved unlike the ridiculous narcissistic Golden Globes show-biz fluff well paid actors acting for God's sake, all continually patting each other on the back, they should get over themselves how do they feel when they read about a Pilot like this - real life drama!
Well done Cpt Sully YOU ARE THE MAN !

big thumbs up to the engineers who designed the engine mountings too, they sheared off exactly as planned saving the whole structure in the process!

Bit of an oversimplification there Rick.
The article mentions that "Officials cite a number of possible causes" and goes on to mention that "While officials use radar and radio collars to track bird populations, habitat destruction and climate change have disrupted migratory patterns".
Nowhere in the article does it mention Global Warming as being a cause of the disaster.

Why is it these days that everything comes down to global warming?! We can't just accept that the pilot was phenomenally brave, an incredible human being with great resolve and presence of mind, we have to put it down to something else! It's almost not politically correct to praise someone any more, we always have to find some other excuse other than simple praise! I say again, hats off to a real hero "Sully".
