This years list has been released.
The usual collection of Luvvies and government cronies getting gongs.
A few unusual ones in the mix though. A knighhood for the scientist responsible for the development of several drugs to treat high blood pressure. Whilst the initial trials were less successful than expected, some of the men asked to remain on the drug due to the unexpected side effects. The drug is now marketed under the name "Viagra" Arise Sir Simon Campbell.
And an CBE to a msn who is literally a wind-up merchant. Trevor Baylis, inventor of the Baygen wind-up radio

2023 Frank Skinner. MBE.
Great stuff. Not sure what for, but a nice thing all the same. Can't wait to hear what he has to say about it.

All classist bollocks. But I'm a disgruntled anarchist.

I think it's right to recognise merit. That's because I am a Tory.

I think Frank Skinner deserves recognition. It would be interesting to read the full citation as you might think that David Badiel has a good claim too.
I don't know, but I expect that he's probably had the nod from Rome as he has become something of a posterboy for sincere faith and RC values.
I don't know if you ever have listened to his radio show on Absolute or his poetry podcast but you're missing out on years of joy if you haven't. In fact, the MBE is probably in recognition of the poetry podcast, which has won many awards and should be required listening for anyone with a soul.

No, I haven't listened to any of it, and I have to confess most poetry's not my thing, although I understand the power of it as a means of describing the indescribable. But I suppose that's more Zen than traditional poetry.
But. I find the honours system itself questionable, not the talents of the individual. Look at Starmer for example.

Baddiel seems pretty rotten. Skinner is interesting. He’s fully acknowledged that pretty much everything he did in the 90s and 00s was inconsiderate and terrible and apologised for all of it. But I’ve not encountered his poetry stuff - not a fan of poetry so I won’t be doing there.

You’re robbing yourself of a great listen and an opportunity to learn some interesting stuff.
