I went to a mixed nursery, boys junior, mixed senior, mixed uni and didn't get traumatised. I was more a traumatiser than traumatisee. You sank or swam.

I took cookery, for O level, hated woodwork and metal work, my mates took the piss for a while till they realized the best place to be to get a girl friend is in a class full of girls. I also did gymnastics rather than footy for the same reason.
