And a quick reminder that he can't "call an election". There are only 2 ways to get an election under the fixed term situation - either 66% of MPs agree to it, or the government falls after a No Confidence vote and then after 2 weeks no other party is able to form a government which holds the confidence of the house.

First PM since Pitt the Younger to lose his very first parliamentary vote. Not exactly damning, that.

The Tory defeat in the Commons paves the way for a vote tomorrow to block No-Deal Brexit.
Leader of the Scot Nats says SNP will back a referendum and campaign for Remain. Scotland voted massively to Remain, by 68% to 32% in 2016.

GE then? Good. I hope we vote in actual fascists, complete with political sanitation squads.

No need for a GE yet. The Non-Tories have a parliamentary majority. They should get a chance to form a government. That's the point of fixed term parliaments.

I'm not sure he can, legality, call a General Election.
As I understand it there wouldn't be the time to change the Fixed Term law - or indeed the majority to vote it through.

No need, perhaps, but let's do it. Democracy's dead in UK. Might as well prove the point.

We appear to have shown that democracy isn't dead. The executive doesn't have the power to ignore the elected representatives.

Terrible, bleak night for decency, honour and democracy. Sad thing is, no matter how you voted in the referendum, this is an insult.

There will be a new electorate for the 2nd referendum. If all qualifying EU citizens have the vote, we can have a democratic result. The argument is that non-British EU citizens can vote in their own national parliamentary elections, so it's not unfair to bar them from British elections. Of course, there could be a choice, to cast your vote in your country of origin or your country of residence. In the referendum they were simply disenfranchised. Yet, Commonwealth citizens could vote.

also shows how little Bozo's promises mean, he stated categorically a while back he would not back a no deal Brexit, if that was so, all this would not even be necessary.

And I expect his promise to expel those Tories who displayed common decency and a respect for the will of parliament, by voting against him, will quickly be forgotten, he can't afford to expel them all, it would give Corbyn a chance to form government first before having a GE.

well well, I was wrong, looks like they've just booted all 21 rebel Tories out.
Ken Clark's response is rather spot on.
Ken Clarke, one of the Tory rebels who faces losing the party whip, insists on BBC Newsnight that he is still a Conservative, but the party has changed.
He says "it’s been taken over by a rather knockabout character who has this bizarre 'crash-it-through' philosophy" and says the cabinet is "the most right-wing any Conservative Party has ever produced".
"They're not in control of events. The prime minister comes and talks complete rubbish to us."
