It is clearly much more widespread in SA than in many other places, and in most other countries where it's been identified Patient Zero has recently travelled from SA or Botswana. You shut down travel to delay the speed of onset in order to give yourself as much time as possible to prepare

The line that SA is being punished for discovering it is a little flawed. Nigeria's presence on the red list is bizarre, but the rest of it makes some sense.

From what I have read the variant was already in Europe. SA just named it.

If it is observable over the globe then a complete travel ban makes sense. A ban on only a handful of countries (some with lower identified rates) does not.

There are some suggestions that it was in Europe before it was identified in SA. But obviously it was also in SA before it was identified in SA. If you think it was in Europe first why were almost all the early omicron cases in the west reported as coming from travellers who’d recently been in Southern Africa? Why is every sequenced case in SA now an omicron case yet this is not happening in European countries? Currently, it seems very likely to have originated - or at least first become widespread - in Southern Africa.
