Ah! Here’s the usual world class point-missing that we’ve come to expect.

Ah! Here’s the usual world class point-missing that we’ve come to expect. Explain to us why a white person playing the role of a non-white character is racist/cultural appropriation, but a non-white person playing the role of a white character is not racist and cultural appropriation? I have seen blacks dress up as Abe Lincoln, George Washington, white viking mythological characters Thor and Heimdall, white comic book characters Sergeant Fury, Spider Man. If it's racist for one ethnicity (whites) to imitate other ethnicities , real or fictional, then it's racist for non-whites (blacks, browns, etc.) to imitate whites. If only whites are singled out, now that is racist. At least be consistent with your outrage rules.

Well, you can start by not conflating racism and cultural appropriation. Then you can learn what cultural appropriation is. And finally you can learn the blackface in particular develops from minstrel shows which were explicitly racist and thus blackface has all kinds of racist connotations that don't exist when the situation is reversed.
But you've read all this already because it's been stated many, many times on these boards and millions more elsewhere. So either it's not worth my while explaining because you'll ignore it now as you ignored it before. Or you're actually incapable of understanding it, but I don't believe anybody is incapable of understanding it. Or you're being utterly disingenuous with the question.

So it would be racially insensitive to black up like a minstrel, but not to just black up?

I think I'll dress up as a black remainer this year for Halloween

Why's that? If it was done respekfully, innit. Say I wanted to pay tribute to Pele by dressing up as him for a football-themed BBQ?

You can put on a Brazil number 10 shirt, become much better at football, and become a nagging god botherer, without any racist daubs on your pretty little visage.
If you feel like you need to have the same colour face as the legendary footballer you're dressing up as, you could perhaps dress up as Ferenc Puskas. Nothing is compelling you to go as Pele.

What if I particularly wanted to pay tribute to Pele?

Print out a life size photo of his face, and make a mask to wear, rather than using makeup on your face.

Why?
He doesn't have white hands. Would it be okay if I wore black gloves?

Would it be okay if I had a chitty from Pele saying that he was cool with it?

Do what you want, it was only a suggestion.

You can go as Pele without blacking up, if you're that desperate to be Pele.

I want to be authentic. He's cool with it.
What's the problem?

I want to be authentic. He's cool with it. What's the problem? Which of these three are you? - didn't bother reading the earlier point - being deliberately disingenuous - or immensely stupid
