I used to enjoy swimming in the river Charente. They're set up for that sort of thing, so it's a real pleasure.

Being a bit anti-social I avoid places where crowds gather (don't like people much) and search out the quiet spots, usually too far to walk for the average tourist. We found some pretty idyllic pools and waterfalls which were difficult to reach but the local council spent thousands improving access so now we don't go any more because they get packed with bellowing idiots.
