And there's always the unfair threat that the fatty will have some fat related health episode on the flight and spoil it for everyone else.

I suppose it comes down to whether the airline is selling a seat or a trip. As they don't specify a weight limit or volume, you have to assume they're selling a trip. You could make a case that we're all having to subsidise the porky, but you'd have to accept half price tickets for kids, midgets and double amputees. Should a 6 ft 4 dude who weighs 110kg pay twice as much as a skinny bird who weighs 55kg? The interesting thing about people who want to buy 2 seats is how much the airlines don't want them to. Because I know if I'm flying across the Atlantic and can buy two cattle class seats for 400 quid each, it's almost as comfortable as a business class ticket that costs 5 grand. The "services" you get in business class - the glass of average wine, the marginally better meal, access to a crowded lounge, getting off the plane a bit quicker - are worth very little to most business travelers. They're nice, but nothing more. The extra space meaning you might sleep and arrive relaxed are what everyone pays for. If there's a much cheaper way of getting the extra space, the airlines want to make that as hard as possible.

I won't pretend to understand the economics of airlines. I'm not sure many of them do either: it's one of those industries which appears to exist solely by wishful thinking.

There's not much a 6'4" dude can do about his size. Fatties can lose weight by eater fewer cakes and going for a walk now and again. There's nothing positive or empowering about being fat.

You're asking airlines to make moral judgements and charge more for people they deem unworthy using whatever classification feels right?

if they want to pay 2 or 3 times the normal fee of one seat, thats one thing.. if they want extra seats and not have to pay for them, thats another. Plus-Size Airline Passenger Demanding Extra Free Seat www.newsweek.com/fat-obese-travel-two-seats-free-plus-size-airline-1795006space is limited on planes. airlines are not obligated to give away free space because some whiner thinks they are special. But you said that it‘a unfair because if they get an extra seat somebody may lose out. Make up your mind? Also unless it’s your business what do you care if an airline decides to let a fat person have an extra seat free?

Definitely on domestic business class but long haul business class trips are significantly better than the same trip in economy.

Also, just to be clear, if a fatty pays double and the middle seat is empty, nobody loses out. In fact, the person in the window seat also gets to stretch out a bit into the fatty's overflow seat and also gets an unpaid-for benefit. Whereas, if the fatty doesn't pay and is in the middle seat oozing and overflowing and squeezing the people in the window and aisle, everybody is extra miserable. Or, even worse, you might be the single passenger where a fatty is in the aisle and another one is in the window and you're getting squeezed between them. Why the f**k would you argue in favour of that? What is wrong with you?

Definitely on domestic business class but long haul business class trips are significantly better than the same trip in economy. Mostly for the space. The extra services are worth maybe a couple of hundred quid. It's really not all that grand apart from the stretching out and having room to put your sh*t.

The booze is better, the cocktails are better (you actually get cocktails) the extra luggage is better. Being able to actually sleep because you can lie flat etc. And of course you mentioned the space. Flying from Australia to the UK - economy vs. business class is not even a competition. Definitely worth 1000s more. (Although maybe not quite what they actually charge…)
