Why do you think it was unnecessary? It's not like "India" was an ancient nation state.

Badly handled? Maybe, but I would argue that the structures that held India together were, logically, in no shape to maintain order as it devolved. Big place, India.

There was no need to have a separate "muslim" nation when rump-India was already going to have a huge muslim minority. Perhaps there was a case for splitting the country completely, Punjab and Kerala and Sindh and Bengal being separate countries, but the partition as it happened seemed unnecessary.

Except that India was an artificial construct and only held together for he convenience of the very state that the "Indians" wanted rid of. It was never India before becoming under UK control, so it is unreasonable to have expected it to remain so.
