I mean, in a very superficial way he's right. Unless we can vaccinate or treat, we are just lengthening the time of the pandemic.

But by lengthening the time of the pandemic it gives us a chance to find a way to vaccinate and treat; it gives us a chance to not overload the hospital system with Borises who want to shake everybody's hand against good advice; and "protecting the vulnerable" doesn't work unless they are literally cut off from everybody for 6 months, which can't happen - if we let the disease run wild the vulnerable will end up being infected anyway.

Again, it's going to be absolutely essential that a good, hard, rational investigation is made of this outbreak.

Also, if you let the pandemic run wild you'll end up with 10% of the workforce in hospital for 2-3 weeks, and unable to work for another couple of weeks; and everyone else who's infected unable to work for 10 days or more. Nobody would be spending money on anything except paracetomol or lucozade. Nobody would be spending. You'd still have nobody taking holidays or getting on planes. Many people would avoid going to bars or restaurants or sporting events. The economy would be utterly f**k*d but you'd also have lots more dead people, including all the ones who'd normally be in hospital for other things.
