Neither of these teams looks very good. England still have the capacity lose to them both but really shouldn't.

Supporting Scotland must be like watching a dog walk on its hind legs, amusing, but largely pointless.

I think as long as you are aware that you're following a country of 5 million people and expect to achieve generally a bit worse than places like Czechia and Bulgaria, but maybe on a par with Norway, then you'd be fine. You'll have periods of success where you'd get very excited but when you're rubbish it should be expected. Supporting a team like England is worse, with pretty much the biggest budget of any international team, a population to match France and Italy and Germany only in Europe, and still only ever making one final in the 35 odd international tournaments you've entered, has to be worse. The reasonable baseline is so much higher and yet England only occasionally get to the level that should be the minimum expected of them. Semi finals should be fairly frequent, not something that's only happened twice in my lifetime.

England's issue can be traced to how our leagues operate. I read somewhere a few years ago of all the top European leagues England top teams have the fewest domestic talent being developed, the Bundersleague has a very high level of domestic players as does France Italy and others. It wasn't that long ago for example Arsenal fielded a starting 11 with all overseas players on a regular basis. The owners are far more likely to buy from overseas than spend time developing home talent.

That's been true for maybe 20-25 years. But that doesn't explain why England were rubbish for most of the preceding 50 years, too.

England's rubbish because the system operates on a 'who you know' personal image basis, not talent. If those doing the recommending are wankers what chance is there?

There's always this massive unreasonable expectation that just being English should mean we'll win, I wonder how much this effects the players, I suppose if they buy into it they'll not try as hard or maybe the pressure is just too much.

England could be great again but it needs a clear out starting from the top. The 'us and them' mentality needs to go.

You're right. It's interesting how living outside the country reinforces that view. I find most non-Brits I talk with barely even think about the UK; it's like a shrug and a grin "Oh them" thing.

wonder if the same thing happened to past big empires when they fell, continuing to think they are still important despite being reduced to next to nothing? I wonder if some aging patrician in a crumbling Rome had the same attitude 'In my day we ruled the known world' or 'sure the barbarians have sacked the city, but we're still the most important one'?

228 days running*. Just saying. *actually I missed my first ever day last week but it credited me with a streak freeze for good attendance. Not sure I get that really but they know what they're doing at DuoLingo.

Not sure I get that really but they know what they're doing at DuoLingo. 486 here. It's amazing the progress you can make with just 10-20 minutes a day if you keep at it consistently. It's a well-structured course, it retests your mistakes and builds upon previous lessons quite well.

Yeah, it's great. Don't even have to pay for anything. I'm learning French.
