Hard to find anything from a credible source, and at the moment all we have is the mum who's child failed a class and is now making accusations as to why and suing the school cos he failed (and this is the US where people sue for silly sh!t all the time, and once they fade from the headlines some judge tells em to f**k off and it all goes away, though you can bet that won't be reported is such shrill terms by these far right sites). Obviously the far right wingnut "press" (sic) have jumped full force on this as its their agenda to claim their racism is fine cos look someones failed kid says he failed 'cos I is white'. The idiots comment is a prime example of what they are trying to pull by screeching about this "people of color have become the biggest racists on the planet." you have to be truly mental to believe that. |

You make a good point with your sarcasm, Mids. People do not learn about the sphinxes of ancient Egypt by looking at the Sphinx. No. Hieroglyphes were never history. Nor icons. Nor the Acropolis. You can't discover anything by unearthing a villa built 2000 years ago. Statue of David? Pffft.
The biggest clue here of course is icons, painted (or strictly speaking 'written') thousands of years ago to illustrate messages of the past (history) for those who could not read or write.
Are you claiming history has to be in the written form?

the statues don't tell history in the context of the US civil war, they represent a fiction and a re-writing of history and that's the difference.

I never said it wasn't true that some mother filed a law suit cos her child failed a class, just that the article was drivel and you'd have to be an idiot to believe what it was trying to convey. |

So you would never replace a bit of art for a better bit of art because the original "is history"? You'd never tear down a crappy run down house and replace it with something lovely and modern because the original "is history"? You'd never replace an ugly symbol of colonialism and oppression and replace it with anything, ever, no matter how ugly the statue is? Because it's history? What do you think statues are for? Are they there as decoration, as commemoration, or as history books? Whichever of the three it is, most of the crappy statues should come down. Statues are not, in and of themselves, history. |
