At least with trans types you can take the piss without being accused of sexism.

Rick’s article was written by Paul Embery, which I think probably tells us how reliable it is.

I was reading the other day that there was pressure on orchestras to do away with blind auditions in order to increase "diversity". Blind auditions being used to ensure that musicians are hired on musical talent alone.

Fuck 'diversity' as a political entity. It's becoming a restrictive requirement if you take a look at the number of literary/film/artistic agents that state 'especially seeking' LGBTQ, female, and minority groups.

It's queer. If you look at the numbers for "diversity" in UK TV, ethnic minorities are way, way over-represented yet the activists (andy, voice, van) still argue for more representation. I wonder where it will end? If we go back to having something like a representation that reflects the country it will mean ditching large number of ethnic minority people from television and you can imagine the shrieking that would ensue. Or are we to accept that, like some sports, there will always be a huge over-representation and that white children will just grow up thinking, "Well TV is really a black thing, not really for the likes of me so I'll just go for a mundane physical job like accounting". It's an interesting issue.

I don't think prioritising increased diversity means bringing in a stylophone and balalaika section. Heh, agreed. It did occur to me that 'diversity' might mean widening style and production so, perhaps, fewer bassoonists were required, but that didn't seem likely.
What I find odd is such a letter would be written at all. I've worked feelance and enjoyed it, but when it comes to an end you get a 'cheers, thanks for the work'. and that was that.
Perhaps I'm too old to comprehend how things work now but a vague letter about 'diversity' seems daft, when there was no requirement for an explanation.

The way I read the story (somewhere else) was that they were freelance but most had done the same gig for years so had become a bit complacent in thinking they had a secure job- encouraged by the orchestra management. It's a bit of a gig economy, strengthened by the fact that competition for places is strong so the employer holds all the cards. Bottom line, yes they knew that the gig could come to an end any time but understandably they'd just grown used to it.

Yeah - they could have just not entered into a new contract, no explanation required.

But given the letter was written it seems clear the new contracts were based on things other than talent.

Yeah - they could have just not entered into a new contract, no explanation required. Phew! That's alright then. Arbitrarily exclusion is fine.

But given the letter was written it seems clear the new contracts were based on things other than talent. Where did you read “things other than talent”? Who says talent would cease to be a consideration? But that’s by the by. I don’t think you are required to re-enter into a contract with a freelancer.

(It is weird though how a diverse pool of contractors is evidence of “arbitrary exclusion” but an all white pool is not.)

Anyway, diversity is great, isn't it? If the difference in "quality" is at best marginal, you'd be better off with a more diverse orchestra (and any other workplace, too). Getting different viewpoints, perspectives and so in is generally better for an organisation than it being a monocultural monolith with an inability to think outside a very narrow outlook.

Nobody said talent wasn't a consideration but things other than talent were prioritised, unless you think diversity is a talent.

That's a logical fallacy, right there. And very wanky. We must, if course, make the most of all of our talent and our talents. That is rational, responsible and fair. Vote Tory. Shoe-horning minority interests, spoon-feeding no-hopers and perpetuating a self of otherness, persecution and victimhood is wicked, wretched and oh-so LibLeft.

There is no persecution or victimhood despite the pathetic victim-complex of the musicians whose contracts weren't renewed. Or, more likely, the author of the piece about their contracts not being renewed.
